I. Introduction to the Subject


   The nuclear science and technology program of Lanzhou University was founded in 1958, and its teachers are mainly assigned to related majors of Peking University, Nanjing University and other cooperation universities. In the early and mid-1960s, outstanding graduates from key universities and some returnees who studied in the former Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and Japan joined in succession, and the two majors of nuclear physics and radiochemistry in Nankai University were relocated as a whole. This major has long been engaged in low-energy and high-current accelerator technology and application research, ion beam physics and its application research in material science, industrial nuclear instrumentation and electronic control technology research and environmental radiochemistry research.     One of the most important research and application fields of this discipline is nuclear energy. Nuclear energy is an indispensable part of the world energy structure, especially the utilization of fission energy has been widely developed, and is recognized as the only alternative to fossil energy at present, which is efficient, clean and economic. The development of nuclear energy has made great progress in the world and plays an increasingly important role in China's national economy.
    This discipline is closely related to the construction of ecological civilization. Environmental protection is a basic national policy of our country, in terms of environmental protection, this subject mainly research of radiation protection, nuclear waste and hazardous waste treatment and disposal, waste recycling, radioactive substances and poisonous and harmful substances in surface water, groundwater, and the migration and transformation rule of atmospheric environment, environmental impact assessment of nuclear waste and hazardous waste management and safety analysis of nuclear technology application in environmental science and engineering, etc. Therefore, this subject is of great significance to protect human health and human living environment.
    Nuclear science and technology not only influence the current world pattern, but also are closely related to our daily life. From the achievement of two bombs and one boat to the rapid development of nuclear power, from shenzhou to chang 'e, from the exploration of life to the realization of new varieties, from the inspection of industrial products to the realization of industrial automation, nuclear science and technology go hand in hand. Energy is the biggest problem in the world today. Although political problems often impede the development of nuclear energy, we all know that the only viable way to solve the energy crisis is nuclear energy, and the safe and effective use of fission nuclear energy and the research and development of fusion nuclear energy as soon as possible are the focus of this discipline.
    From the perspective of the strategic layout of the national nuclear industry, the majority of research institutions and production institutions are concentrated in the west, especially Gansu province, where this discipline is located. It is a veritable big nuclear province, which covers all links of the complete nuclear industry system except nuclear power stations, and is the province with the most complete nuclear facilities in China. The backbone of nuclear-related research institutions and large state-owned enterprises in gansu province mainly comes from their own disciplines. Therefore, the development of this major has advantaged geographical advantages and human resources advantages, and can give play to the advantages of science and technology to serve the local economic construction and transport high-quality talents with professional counterparts.


II. Subject Direction


     In response to the needs of the state, especially the needs of national defense, the department has carried out a great deal of scientific research and has made remarkable achievements. Most of the research achievements have reached the domestic advanced level and some have reached the international advanced level, forming distinct features and advantages. In recent years, according to the frontier of the discipline and the national strategic needs, the discipline points have further condensed the research direction, highlighted the characteristics, and consolidated their advantages in the following aspects.
     1. Fusion Neutronics: focus on the development of fast neutron generator equipment, and use such equipment to carry out research on neutron physics and technical application. We have successively developed several neutron generators with the output of 1010, 1011 and 1012 neutron/SEC for our brother units and our own research stations. Among them, the 3.3x1012 neutron/second strong current neutron generator developed and installed in this discipline is the only fast neutron generator in China reaching the order of 1012 neutron/second, ranking first in China and at the advanced level in the world. It is designated by the national defense science and industry bureau as one of the simulated neutron sources for radiation strengthening of China's strategic weapons. At the same time, it has also developed low-energy heavy ion injection device, high-current double-plasma ion source, multi-purpose small accelerator, neutron moisture meter, neutron activation analyzer, high-current high-voltage power supply, special high-voltage pulse power supply, space single-particle effect simulation device, aerospace optical communication simulation device, etc.
    4. Nuclear Environment: mainly studies the adsorption, migration and storage behaviors of radionuclides in environmental media, as well as chemical problems related to nuclear waste treatment and disposal. Some graduate students are employed in environmental protection, quality inspection and technical supervision, nuclear power construction and operation units. In the technology and application direction of high-current low-energy accelerator, a 6-by-1012 neutron/SEC high-current neutron generator was built. We should make use of the advantages of human resources, accelerator technology, nuclear detection technology, nuclear power electronics and control technology to serve the social and economic development of the country, as well as the technical progress and economic development of our province. A large number of ITER materials, military nuclear materials and biological samples provided by scientific research institutions of our province have been irradiated by the neutron beam of the strong current neutron generator.
